Qualitative Interviews

Definition

Qualitative interviews are open-ended, exploratory conversations used to gather in-depth insights about people’s experiences, perceptions, motivations, and needs. Unlike surveys, they allow flexibility and deep probing.

They are widely used in user research, service design, innovation, education, marketing, and social sciences.

  • Structured – same fixed questions for all participants
  • Semi-structured – core questions + flexible follow-ups (most common)
  • Unstructured – conversational and fully exploratory

Benefits

  • Reveals underlying beliefs, unmet needs, and emotions
  • Helps identify patterns, pain points, and opportunities
  • Supports hypothesis generation and concept validation
  • Builds empathy with users or customers
  • Useful for Personas, Customer Journey Maps, or Design Thinking
