Understanding the process, the work

Definition

This refers to the deep, structured observation and analysis of how work is actually performed, in order to reveal the real process, not just the documented one. It is foundational in Lean to identify value, waste, variation, and improvement opportunities.

Benefits

  • Clarifies the actual current state of work (vs assumptions)
  • Reveals non-value-added steps, inefficiencies, and rework
  • Builds shared understanding across teams
  • Enables fact-based improvement
  • Strengthens respect for people by valuing frontline knowledge
